Music Across the Pond

Since his days as a student volunteer in Appalachia, Walt has performed for and with children throughout the US, the UK and Canada.  Music Across the Pond is an assembly program that celebrates old-time string band song, music and dance, tracing the multicultural lineage of rural America’s folk music and dance back to its origins in Africa, The British Isles and Europe.

The fiddle, mandolin, banjo, guitar, string bass, autoharp, harmonica, mountain dulcimer and hammered dulcimer are woven into a tapestry of songs and instrumental selections. The audience enjoys the age-old joy of group singing, and the program culminates with a Virginia Reel dance by a pre-selected and instructed troupe of students. Joining Walt Michael are fiddler and multi-instrumentalist Alexander Mitchell and cellist/bassist Ralph Gordon.

Music Across the Pond is offered at four grade levels:

Grades K-2  grades 3-5, grades 6-8 middle school, and grades 9-12 senior high school.

Additional workshops in group singing, songwriting, folk dance and stringed instrument instruction are available in day-long residencies, which include Music Across the Pond.

Walt Michael and Company are touring members of the Maryland State Arts Council AIE (Arts in Education).  click here
